The Saschall Theater inaugurated its first season as “Teatro Tenda” in 1978. An empty, open territory on the right side of the Arno river became the location for an old green and yellow circus tent that from that season on would no longer host acrobats and exotic animals for its circus but would welcome actors and musicians. That’s how the magic and brief period of the “season of the tents” began, with circus tents located in all main Italian cities which seemed to finally resolve the lack of venues dedicated to entertainment.
‘Tents’ represented an alternative to the classic theater space which, in spite of its commodities, seemed much too rigid for the social and politic atmosphere of the time. For rock, and music in general, dance clubs or ‘balere’ would be frequented or, as an alternative, car and train would be the only solutions to reach cities which had better overall structures. The tent was therefore the first way of finding a solution for various forms of entertainment, as was proved by the varied cultural activities which took place in the following years. Of the various chapiteau (this is the French name used to identify this kind of structure), the first one that was made was also the smallest, containing about 1600 people along its perimeter made of stairs. That first structure has been depicted in the cover of an album of a very famous and loved Italian song author and singer, Fabrizio De Andrè, an album which was recorded live inside the “Teatro Tenda” during the his concert in 1979.

Starting 1992 a change in property launched a renovation in the overall structure of the theatre, which brought to its current appearance in 2002 with the birth of a completely new structure: the Saschall Theater.
